Musicólogo e intérprete británico de origen francés. Se mudó a Inglaterra tras haber estudiado violín con Henri Vieuxtemps (1820–81). Ahí empezó a coleccionar y reparar instrumentos antiguos y aprendió a tocarlos. Labró copias de laúdes, clavicordios, clavecines y flautas dulces antiguos, involucrando también a su esposa e hijos en la interpretación y difusión de la música antigua. Su Interpretación de la música de los siglos XVII y XVIII (1915) fue muy influyente, y es considerado el padre del resurgimiento de la música antigua en el s. XX.
